Mychael Barratt: Notes from the Underground - Extended
In 2013, the London Underground turned 150 years old and to commemorate that I created my etching Notes from the Underground, which used a visual representation for every one of the stations. This piece was in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and was quickly out of print. This year, the Underground turned 160 years old and has recently seen its first extension since the Jubilee Line in 1999 as the Northern Line has been extended to include stations at Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station. I decided to revisit the project and looked afresh at every one of the references. Most of the references I previously used were either so iconic (Karl Marx for Highgate) or so perfect (the woman with the beehive hairdo at High Barnet) that I repeated and redrew them. A number have been changed either to make them more relevant or because I had learned of something irresistible (Bourbon biscuits created by Peek Freans in Bermondsey were the first biscuits eaten by Buzz Aldrin on the moon).
