  oak, ash, gingko, eucalyptus,

                            evergreen, deciduous

like parents

                                 they watch over us

hold our whisperings

                                          discuss with no-one, 

                        respond in birdsong

in hushed tones, in constancy

Karen’s cedar towers majestically, 

commands attention,

my dying cypress pales, 

confounds with drilled stigmata 

still, 

we look up to them

mould hands around 

rough unravelled braids of bark

and breathe,

all the better for it
