'In September 1992 John Hoyland spent two weeks working at the Thupelo Workshops, 35 miles outside Johannesburg, South Africa. Initially uneasy about working in a country then in the process of transitioning out of the racist Apartheid system, he waited until he received "clear affirmation from the ANC [Nelson Mandela's African National Congress party] that they would like me to visit." He produced ten paintings during the fortnight, including Red Root, 1992. A number of subsequent paintings included 'Thupelo' in their title, as well as a print and a ceramic sculpture.' - John Hoyland Studio
This work was likely produced during Hoyland'd stay in South Africa, or made in the immediate weeks after he returned home.
