JASON HICKLIN | THE RIVER: PART TWO
COMETH LIGHT
-
It is the view of this section of river, these buildings – rather than the component parts themselves – that is the true subject of these prints, as is suggested by each title referencing not what is seen, but from where it is seen. When taken as a whole, the work foregrounds our perspective, centred as it is on the twisting, looping, serpentine Thames which, as we progress along, is constantly deceiving us, swapping landmarks from one side of the skyline to the other. Nothing highlights this as vividly, and indeed, literally, as the Scalpel, the highly reflective sloping peak of which appears, in Jason’s words, to be tumbling across the city.
Between these tensions, of immovable icons and shifting perspectives, of the protean cityscape and the enduring course of the river, of variety in mark-making and unity of image, these etchings seem to quiver with the very fragility of light. A London which one recognises as instantly familiar whilst also seeing it afresh.

It was the light that bounced off The Scalpel… It was only walking away on a hot summers day with the sun in a particular direction, and looking back to the City I was struck by this triangle of light that became a beacon as I walked. And I really enjoyed, as I walked, that the shape or the angle changed as well. I described it to someone as a 'triangle tumbling across the landscape’.
