Eames Fine Art are delighted to present a new body of work by Andrew Marr for this, his third solo exhibition with us.
Andrew's return to the Print Room will feature a selection of his new drawings and paintings. Drawing continues to be a focal point of his work, with his sketchbooks filled with energetic experimentative mark making. Now, Andrew has introduced ink and pastel as new mediums to his drawings, developing colour and texture to a greater degree.
"This is a show of oil paintings and works on paper done at a time in my life when I have been far busier than I expected, working on an LBC politics show and as political editor of the New Statesman. As ever, the art has been a refuge from the surface madness of politics; there is no time in the week when I am happier than faced with a new blank canvas or sheet of paper. Something takes over and I’m going with the flow."
- Andrew Marr, May 2023

Paintings
"The paintings and drawings are related to one another, but not directly: the works in oil are as purely abstract as anything I have been doing before – that is, not entirely; you will find references to bodies, the time of day, and some of the symbolism I’ve used for years." - Andrew Marr

Pastels
I have been working on paper far more – there are about 100 or more new works available. In the past I have been “cutting” into the paper to achieve new textures with coloured pencils. I am still texture-obsessed and a big breakthrough for me since the last show was a gift.My friend the painter Adrian Hemming passed over a box of pastels he wasn’t using. I’ve always found pastels awkward – they are messy and for someone who enjoys lively, wristy lines, not an obvious medium. But I found the sheer rich vibrancy of the colours increasingly irresistible and loosened up in response. Adding, as I’ve started to do, ink, to the pencils, pastels and cutting has given me a wider variety of surface texture then I’ve ever had before. - Andrew Marr -

"In terms of theme, these are again pictures about the world around me at a subconscious level. I am beginning to make, alongside abstract works describing a mental state during a particular day, or a piece of music, or the physical experience of a walk, sequences based on deeper thinking. I am an obsessed reader of James Joyce and have been deep in his most mysterious book, Finnegans Wake; and there are drawings about that." - Andrew Marr -
