Vertical Suite
"When I look at the Vertical landscape series I can’t stop thinking about Sables Mouvants linocuts because they were the very first link I had with figurative landscape. Sables Mouvants were images inspired by a cloth observation of the Loire river, made of foliages and long grass. Very bucolic. A landscape where human traces aren’t visible. In the Vertical landscapes series humans are definitely here but still branches and architectures melt together, live together.I wanted to work on a balance between straight lines and organized shapes inspired from architectures but also more organic cuts and lines coming from nature patterns. An explosion of branches in Soccori or a tangle of lignes in Regretière.Here, I allowed myself to work with more details while keeping a clean aesthetics. An aesthetic of the tache noire inspired from Félix Vallotton’s woodcuts that I adore. Each of these linocuts have a proper name but I like to call this ensemble Vertical landscapes or Vertical suite. While I was selecting my subjects and started working on the series I realized all were vertical. I quickly understood that it was because of my smartphone. The title Vertical landscapes is also a way of diverting from the traditional idea of a landscape, linked to horizontality and panoramic vision. Maybe Vertical landscape could be seen as landscape in the age of vertical screens." - Chloé Bocquet, 2023 -

"It’s true that with my Vis-à-Vis monotypes series I gave a rather colorful overview of my artworks. With Vertical Suite I open a new chapter about color. My colors became darker and I think this darkening comes from my latest large format series called Nocturne (Nocturnal). A project on which I was working just before starting Verticale Suite. The starting point of the Nocturne series was to work on night landscapes. Images that inspire darkness, the indecision and the imprecision about what we see and what we don't see when the sun falls. Each Nocturnes are made by superpositions and handprinted. This way of processing gave a peculiar texture to the print. For example in Nocturne 1, I choose to print at first a wood plate with no cuts, to have only the materiality of the wood printed on the paper. The second time I printed the blue figurative parts. I like that this image is separated into two parts. On the top we recognize trees, something we can relate to a landscape or maybe a cityscape with this suggested advertising panel. Above, the other part of the image is only composed of the materiality of the printed woodblock, which reminds me of soil texture. " - Chloé Bocquet, 2023
