'Pezzi e Pezzetti, meaning ‘pieces’ and ‘small pieces’ in Italian, are printed from off-cuts of my sculptures in wood and stone. I began the series in 2019, initially using only very small pieces of wood. This was in part necessitated by my move to Italy in 2018, and the need to set up a studio. Organising the space for printing took longer than anticipated, and I no longer had easy access to a lithography studio, my preferred medium. I turned to the woodblock process in order to develop a new body of work within the restrictions of my new surroundings.The use of off-cuts from carvings also continues my method of using material wastage from the carving process to inform and make other artworks in a different medium, such as using stone dust in my prints and other works on paper and canvas. All of the prints have been made on Japanese paper and are hand burnished. Each piece of wood or stone within a design is separately printed. This procedure allowed me to make use of the texture of the wood/stone, its grain and the marks left over from the cutting.'- Malcolm Franklin, 2024

Insomnia series

The Insomnia prints owe their origin to a wood sculpture of the same name, first exhibited in the 2007 Discerning Eye exhibition, which was chosen by Sarah Armstrong Jones. I consider this to be a pivotal piece within the overall body of my work. Subsequently I had this sculpture cast in bronze, directly from the carving and edition n.4 of 6 forms part of this exhibition.The aquatints I made last year at Stamperia d’Arte Albicocco in Udine take their inspiration from the first set of Insomnia lithographs no.1 to 6, made in 2012 at Oaks Editions, and in particular Insomnia 3. At this time I also made a one off trial proof of Insomnia 3 (2013) in which the motif had been flipped and reversed. I continued this use of a double motif in the aquatints, and added chine collé for the first time. This process, which I had never tried before allows to introduce another colour by means of a thin sheet of tissue paper, 'papier de Chine', which is pasted, 'collé', onto the thicker paper before it goes through the press to receive the printed image. The result is an extra colour, of course, but also an extra depth, due to the texture of the pasted paper.
